Description
"The Riverfront Guest House" located at #422 Rear S. Main Street centrally located in the historic district of St. Charles, Missouri is a charming, upscale brick guest cottage built in 1830's and 100% remodeled in 2013 for the vacation rental experience and sleeps 4 people. The Riverfront Guest House was originally a wheelwright shop that made and repaired wagon wheels for the thousands of new settlers and explorers coming through St. Charles and heading westward. Today it has been completely refinished with beautiful modern amenties while restoring much of the original, unique qualities such as exposed brick walls, and large exposed wood beams. This ambiance continues to the surrounding area of Main Street St. Charles and Riverfront. With over 10 blocks on the Historic District National Registry, its one of the largest districts in the country. Panoramic views of the Missouri river greet you right out the front door.
The main floor (ground level) of this quaint cottage sleeps 2 people and includes a lovely queen size bed with luxury bedding and mattress. There is a very large corner gas fireplace with elevated brick hearth, kitchen with refrigerator, freezer, and microwave, and an antique table and chairs where you can sit and gaze out at Frontier Park and watch the beautiful Missouri river go by. Enjoy cable TV on a large wall hanging flat screen TV from the king bed or seating area. The full bathroom also on the main ground level includes a walk in shower with two shower valves, one rainshower shower head and another multiple mode shower head.
The 2nd floor of the cottage sleeps two more guests and has two cozy built in twin beds with comfortable twin mattresses and bedding and individual lighting. Warm walnut floors and low ceilings make this an inviting place for children or adults to sleep. A window in the exposed brick wall provides a great view of Frontier Park and the Missouri River. A separate flat screen TV is also included with a Wii gaming system for the children to enjoy on this floor.
The historic cottage has been completely remodeled and designed entirely with vacation renters in mind. The cottage is completely private and separate from "The Main Street Guest House' located near the cottage, and can be rented separately or with The Main Street house for guests traveling with multiple parties or large groups. All modern amenities are included such as two 40 gallon hot water heaters so you never run out of hot water, cable TV, Wifi, always new and freshly cleaned bedding and linens, Keurig coffee maker, and high efficiency heating and cooling, and much more. Take a short troll across Riverside Drive into Frontier Park along the Missouri River, ride a bike on The Katy Trail directly in front of the cottage, or walk the cobblestone sidewalk along the one of the largest historic districts on the national registry. Countless shopping and dining options await you, all within walking distance (less than a half mile in either direction). The best part, most are unique businesses that you won't find anywhere else, like Braddens restaurant, Lewis and Clark restaurant, Winery of the Little Hills (great outdoor seating with fire pits located right across the street), Mother-in-Law House restaurant 98ft away, The Hobbit Hole Antiques, Moss next door for some of the latest fashion, Trailhead Brewery, Grandmas Cookies a few doors down, and countless others. A personal favorite with our family of four small of children is Riverside Sweets located only two doors down where visitors of all ages can enjoy some of the best ice cream, homemade candy and fudge, caramel apples, and walls and walls of candy and collectibles to choose from. A few blocks north, Picasso's offers a great cup of coffee and some live music at times. Grab breakfast at The Bike Stop Cafe and rent a bike for a peaceful ride on The Katy Trail just a few hundred feet from the home. Ameristar Casino is also located within a mile of the home just outside the Historic area for those looking for a little nightlife. Two major malls, Mid-Rivers Mall, and St. Louis Premium Outlet Mall, are located 10 minutes in either direction. Located on the other side of highway 70, The St. Charles Convention Center and Family Arena are located about five minutes from the guest house. A short 25 minute drive will get you to most St. Louis Attractions such as The Arch, The St. Louis Zoo, The Magic House, The City Museum, The Art Museum, Grants Farm, Busch Stadium, The Fox Theatre, The Peabody, The Art Museum, and so many other fun things to do and see. Spend the day seeing the sights of St. Louis and then head back to family friendly St. Charles, walk to dinner, and kick back and relax and visit with your loved ones at night. The home is located approximately 10-15 minutes from St. Louis Lambert Airport, with plenty of public and private transportation available. St. Peters Catholic church is just a short 1/4 mile stroll away, as well as the Main Street Church on North Main. SSM St. Joseph Health Center is also located within 1/4 mile for those needing a place to stay while visiting loved ones, or if health issues should arise. Beyond every expectation
My sister and I rented the Riverfront House for a girl’s weekend. It was absolutely amazing. As a history buff it is heaven to step back in time...with 21st century amenities. Audrey and Matt have thought of everything to make a guest comfortable. I have encouraged everyone of my friends to book this house.
Wonderful Time
We loved our time at the riverfront guest house! We'd anticipated it for a long time, and were excited to spend a couple of nights of our honeymoon there. The cottage was everything we hoped it would be, and more. The bed was comfortable and we especially loved the fireplace! The snacks were much appreciated too. The fact that it is located in the heart of St. Charles' historic district was another big plus, as I love history and my wife loves shopping in unique stores. We had a great time, and plan on a return visit in the future!
Excellent location and atmosphere
Second time staying in a property belonging to the same owner. We had a great time in St. Charles visiting with family and friends, and the Brick Cottage was an essential part of if. With a 2 month-old baby, it made everything easier for friends and family to come by and meet the little guy. Much better than staying at a hotel. Loved how cozy it was. All our visitors loved it as well. The owners were amazing, as always! Nice touch with all the Christmas decoration. That was definitely a plus in their customer care skills and a nice touch to our stay. Looking forward to being there again.
Charming cottage, great location
My husband and kids were instantly charmed with the Riverfront Cottage. My kids especially loved their alcove beds, and the fact that ice cream was mere steps away! I was concerned about being farther out from St.Louis than I had originally planned, but that ended up being a complete non-issue. Traveling to and from was a breeze, and the charming location and great river front made this vacation one of our favorites. My family demands that we stay here again if our travels bring us back to the St. Louis area.
Our Anniversary Trip
My husband and I really enjoyed staying at the Riverfront Cottage. The location couldn't be better. We were right in the middle of all the attractions. We loved how the cottage was decorated for Christmas too. We had a nice relaxing time during our visit and plan to come back next year! Thanks for all the extra's that were included it made our stay even more enjoyable.
Exceptional Quality and Perfect Location
The Riverfront Guest House was perfect in every way. The location is right in the middle of historic St. Charles, you could not ask for a better location. The guest house itself is very beautiful and has a ton of character and charm. The snacks, beverages and Christmas decorations were unexpected but, very thoughtful. All amenities are of high quality and the place is very inviting, cozy and offered a very relaxing atmosphere. Audrey was very accommodating in every way. We will most definitely be staying here again and I can not recommend this place enough. It was perfect.
Great, except the bed.
Very nice in every way except the bed which was noisy. You couldn't move without waking your partner. Also, the web site says king size in some places and queen size in others. If they fix the bed it would be perfect.
Owner Response
Thank you for your review, and I'm very sorry that you had issues with the bed. We only wish that we would have known during your stay as we would have been happy to try to fix the situation had we known. After receiving your review today, we immediately looked at the bed, tightened all the bolts and applied thread locker to make sure none of the bolts come loose again. It seems there were just a couple bolts that had apparently loosened slightly causing a little noise but should be fixed now. We also added more supports underneath the mattress in case the box springs were part of the problem. It seems that all is well now and noise free! We checked the websites, and you were correct. There was one place on our personal website that said "king", and we have changed that to say "queen" and apologize for the confusion. With three rental homes available and so many different listings and websites that we advertise with we must have overlooked that one detail and appreciate you letting us know. We are glad to hear that everything else was perfect, and hope that you will come stay again!
Perfect in Every Way
We are so grateful to have found this property! Audrey and Matt have done an amazing job turning this historic property into a well appointed modern place to stay with all the charm you expect and hope for in historic St. Charles. The location is perfect for local interests and makes for a nice respite after visits into St. Louis (most attractions are an easy 30 minutes or less). Our children (14 and 10) loved the guest house and thought the upstairs space was perfect. We are already looking forward to our next visit and will be back for sure. It was perfect in every way...
Owner Response
Thanks so much, Brian! I'm so glad we got to meet you and your family, and that you enjoyed the guest house. We look forwarding to having you back!
Perfect for short visit to St Charles
We had a great time at the cottage and it was perfect for our weekend trip to the St Louis area. The cottage is well equipped and although it is quiet small everything you need is there and it is kitted out to a very high specification. The snacks were also much appreciated! St Charles is a lovely old town and very relaxing. You can park right next to the cottage which is great. You can also walk out of the cottage and withing a couple of minutes stroll along the riverside or go to one of the many restaurants. The cottage was perfectly located for our Keith Urban concert on the other side of the river and we also took the opportunity to go and see the Cardinals at Busch Stadium on another evening. We will book this cottage again if we are in the St Louis area. Thanks for looking after us so well.
St. Charles Guest House
A delightful surprise! Charming, exceptionally well maintained with all the right amenities to make an extended weekend easy. Perfect location, just a hop, skip, and a jump to all of historic Main Streets restaurants, shopping, Katy Trail. Close to airport. Will return next year without a doubt!
Great place to stay.
We stayed at the Riverfront Cottage for a few days and loved it. We were riding on the Katy bike trail and this place is great. The trail is right in front of the door. Everything is within biking or walking distance, sightseeing, restaurants, and shopping. We were a couple and didn't use the upstairs which would be best for children but could work for other adults if needed. The kitchen is best for quick food preparation but why try to cook when you have great restaurants within steps of this place. The owners, Matt and Audrey are available if needed and very accommodating. I hope we can visit this place again.
Perfect Place to Be!
We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived in St Charles and to our Cottage, they both were picture perfect! A welcoming town with great shops and resturants. Traveling with my husband & I was my 19 year old daughter and a friend visiting from Japan. She really loved this cottage, as we all did, it is the cottage to visit. We will return to this lovely find!
Billy Tulsa
Great location. Walked a couple minutes to Bike Shop for breakfast and coffee. Easy access in and out of St Louis. Very cool A/C ....a big plus in my book! And comfy beds
Perfect Stay!
We were in town for a Geocaching event. What a great location. We were able to hike, bike, shop and eat without ever moving our car. The place is beautiful. The snacks were a very much appreciated touch after spending the day out with friends. Thanks so much!
Perfect little cottage in Historic St. Charles
The Riverfront Guest House turned out to be just what our family was hoping for when we spent a week in St. Charles. The property is very clean, well appointed and wonderfully located. The owners are very friendly and were genuinely interested in our needs and comfort. This little cottage has a main level with a sitting and sleeping area combined. There is a kitchenette as well so it was easy to make quick breakfasts and lunches. We didn't worry much about most meals because St. Charles has so many great restaurants at which to eat. There are many places to shop, get a cup of coffee or even delicious ice cream - and ALL within walking distance of the Guest House. The upstairs has two nook beds and a sitting/play area. This is where our two daughters slept, and they thoroughly enjoyed staying somewhere historic. The Riverfront park is right across the street - a nice view and an easy walk to go play or just relax. We prefer staying in a house over a hotel and Riverfront Guest House is now one of our favorites. We will definitely stay here again.
Spring Break Getaway
We are a family of 4, husband, wife and 2 children, ages 6-years and 3-years. We stayed at the "cottage" for 3 nights as part of our spring break. It was PERFECT for our family. The sleeping arrangements were great. The kids loved their 'bed(s) in the wall,' and enjoyed their own little oasis on the top floor. My husband and I appreciated being able to put the kids to bed while having our own space in which to relax for the evening with a glass of wine, conversation, and a fireplace! The cottage is walking distance to anything you might like to do in St. Charles. We walked to dinner each evening of our stay. The view of the river, and its activity, (tugboats and barges), was a highlight for our family. St. Louis was a short drive and we easily navigated to both the Gateway Arch and the St. Louis Zoo, on 2 separate days, without issue. The only (slight) issue we had was regulating the temperature of the upstairs sleeping area. It tended to run very warm, despite opening windows both upstairs and downstairs to create a flow of air for the kids. We had evening temperatures of approximately 40 degrees, or less, and we needed to keep the heat off in the cottage in order for the upstairs to remain comfortable for sleeping. While we slept with the fireplace on one night - for our own comfort - the next 2 nights we kept it off, as the kids were pretty hot that first night. Other than this minor issue - we had an absolutely perfect stay and are anticipating a return visit in the future! The only adjustment...we will bring a fan!
Owner Response
We really appreciate the kinds words and are glad to hear your family enjoyed your time! It is so great to hear from guests after their stay and often wonder how it went, so thank you. These reviews are extremely helpful to us as well as future guests and we are very grateful for taking a moment to share your experience. It is our goal to always create the very best stay for our guests and will never stop improving. Our apologies for the discomfort on the second floor for the kids the one night. With the fireplace running through the night, I could understand it could be warmer on the floor above. We already have one fan in the upstairs closet but after your review, we decided to buy two more powerful fans right away to make sure everyone is completely comfortable at all times and to make sure the fireplace can be used any time you desire. The large brick fireplace is one of our favorite things in the cottage and want to make sure it is being utilized! After a complete 100% remodel less than one year ago, we added plenty of insulation and tightened up the historic 1830's cottage back to where it needed to be, and I guess on nights when the temperature outside is mild, it can be a little tougher to regulate inside with the fireplace running constantly. That being said, we always encourage our guests to set the thermostat however it suits them best during their stay even if you wanted to turn the air conditioning on briefly to put a chill back in the air while running the fireplace. Also, the thermostat could be set to fan only to circulate the air evenly to both floors as another option. Again, we thank you for your kind words and for using our home for your spring break destination. We look forward to hearing from you in the future!
PERFECT!
Had a great girls weekend here! It is absolutely the perfect location! Well worth the extra money to stay here vs a hotel! Hoping to go back this fall with our other halves :)
Great Trip!
Enjoyed a long weekend getaway with two young children. Kids loved upstairs. House was spotless and nicely renovated. Would love to come back in summer as St. Charles not really awake in March. It is a decent drive to attractions downtown but St. Charles has a wonderful atmosphere and we would love to come back. Highly recommend.
Perfect for a get-away!
We recently stayed in this charming guest house while enjoying some time in St. Charles. When I booked the rental, I thought it might be too good to be true. We were more than pleasantly surprised upon arriving to an adorable, cozy house with modern finishes and amenities. The perfect place for our family of three (the third being a baby so not having shared walls was a huge bonus)! Every detail was covered, from the fully stocked kitchenette (WITH Keurig coffee cups) to the pack 'n play upstairs for the baby. Audrey even gave us some great recommendations for dining and activities in the area. We will stay here again for sure!
Adorable Cottage in the heart of St Charles
Well appointed cottage in the heart of Historic St Charles. The cottage is beautifully restored offering the best of old and new. It contains a well appointed kitchenette, wifi, cable tv, comfortable queen bed, and an adorable loft if you are traveling with company. Located in the heart of Historic St Charles you can easily leave your car and enjoy great dining and quaint shops.
Family weekend in December
The cottage is lovely and well-appointed with all necessary amenities for a comfortable stay. The listing photos and description were accurate; the property is exceptionally clean and well-maintained; and the cottage was very attractively decorated for Christmas. The location could not be better for visiting St. Charles and checking out the wonderful shops. We had several very nice meals in Main Street restaurants, toured the Old State Capitol, Katy Depot, and the Lewis & Clark Museum, and really enjoyed the Christmas activities in St. Charles. We look forward to returning to this cottage.
Perfect Location!
We loved our stay in St. Charles! This charming house is right by all the restaurants and shops. You hardly need a car; everything is walking distance. Great places around the house to take family photos! The home worked for the four of us who stayed there. The upstairs did get too hit, so we didn't get to enjoy the fireplace like we had hoped. You may want to bring a fan for the people who sleep upstairs. There was room upstairs for an air mattress if one is needed. Take some Kcups if you have certain ones you really like! We would definitely stay there again, but it would be a tight fit if you had more than 4 adults!
Owner Response
Thank you so much, Donna! It was a pleasure having you stay with us! We love The Riverfront Guest House too and find the location to be the best part! Sorry to hear the fireplace was not utilized like you would have wanted. The home is cozy and great for small families or a couple and would agree that 4 adults is the max. The large fireplace is one of our favorites about the house but could see the upstairs warming up with it continuously running on these mild fall days so we will be sure to add a fan upstairs immediately and we always encourage our guests to use the air conditioning and heating as desired to make sure everyone is comfortable always. Also glad to hear the Keurig coffee maker is being used. We always try to provide about 6-10 different flavors, but you can certainly bring your favorites as well. Thank you so much for staying with us and the feedback is much appreciated and will be used promptly! -Matt & Audrey
WONDERFUL VRBO - WE LOVED IT!
Wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay at your VRBO in St Charles, MO from October 10 - 14, 2013. You have done an amazing job in preserving the historic look of everything, but modernizing it at the same time. We enjoyed every minute. Staying so close to Main Street was perfect and we enjoyed the walking, shopping and restaurants very much. We have definitely spread the word about your VRBO, will continue to and we would like to come back ourselves!
Charming guest house in charming town
The attention to detail was remarkable. The choice of sinks, exposed brick, upstairs beds recessed into the walls, and other things were quite thoughtful and contributed to the sense of historical accuracy. But modern comfort needs were also met for the most part - the shower was impressive, TVs upstairs and down, a nice selection of DVDs, coffee maker, etc. I do recommend that a couch be added to the downstairs to allow the whole group to lounge together for a movie or conversation. It was clean and well-stocked. St. Charles was a lovely town with an old-time feeling. It was pleasant to wander Main St. Be aware that the shops have surprisingly limited hours of business. Late night weekends were lively in the restaurants and bars. The City Museum in St. Louis was fantastic. It was like a fun house on the edge of a nightmare. Great for ages 5 to 64. We had trouble finding a nature outing, even though we had recommendations from a former St. Louis resident. We settled on Elephant Rocks State Park which was unique and well worth the visit, but since it was brutally hot when we were there, we had hoped to find a park with water access. Perhaps I should blame that on the GPS.
Charming and Well Situated
We were fortunate to be among the first guests to stay at this lovingly restored, former wheelwright's shop in July 2013. It's situated in the historic district of St. Charles, MO, the location from which Lewis & Clark began their westward expedition. It is a quaint area filled with shops, restaurants, outdoor cafes, and entertainment. The cottage is between a parking lot and the Missouri River, with a splendid view of the river, the restored train station, and Frontier Park. Architecturally, the building is much the same as it was in its original form, with exposed brick walls, wood beams, carriage doors, and wide plank floors. The new additions are a cozy fireplace, modern kitchenette (no stove) with mini fridge, comfortable mattresses, luxurious shower & bath, wide screen TV's and DVD players, and exceptional air conditioning. We recommend bringing your own folding chairs as the only seating is kitchen chairs, which we found a little uncomfortable to sit on for more than a few minutes. The things we loved best about it were the short walk to town or to stroll the river, the historical feel, the friendly owners, and the cleanliness of the place. We look forward to returning.
Owner Response
Thank you so much for kind review! And I'm happy say that we've added a comfortable love seat for lounging. We'd love to have you again!
Clean, cozy and comfortable
Wonderful get away to this recently renovated cottage...want to return in the fall/winter to enjoy the bedroom fireplace!
